Qualification and Professional Standards in the Field(s) of
Social Marketing and Behaviour Change

with Matthew Wood (Brighton University, UK) and Phillip Holden (Old Royal Naval College, UK)

How should qualified Social Marketers and behaviour change agents be recognised? This webinar discusses a proposal for ESMA / iSMA / AASM / SMANA to formally assess and endorse existing qualifications awarded by recognised bodies (e.g. universities) and, where certain criteria are met, to make an additional award such as an ESMA/iSMA/AASM/SMANA certificate or diploma in social marketing.

Defining and gaining recognition for the field(s) of social marketing and behaviour change have been recurring themes of academic and practitioner discussion, as reflected in journals, conferences and other meetings, and in ongoing discussion within the professional associations. Some consensus on definitions and competencies have already been reached (French & Russell-Bennett, 2015). Discussions amongst ESMA members raised the possibility of the Association endorsing or otherwise recognising qualification and professional standards in the field(s) of social marketing and behaviour change. The potential benefits include the following:

  • Increased visibility and status of those with expertise in social marketing, and of the discipline;
  • Adding value to the education and training of existing providers in this area;
  • Establishing ESMA/iSMA/AASM/SMANA as the ‘hubs’ of such expertise;
  • Establishing and maintaining a database of qualifications in social marketing;
  • Encouraging the establishment of new credit bearing courses and programmes in USA, Europe, Australia and worldwide.

This 60-minute iSMA webinar will be presented by Matthew Wood (Brighton University, UK) and Phillip Holden (Old Royal Naval College, UK) on Tuesday, 31st January, 2017. The ESMA members have free access to the webinars. Log on the iSMA website to join this webinar and access the archive of previous events.
