Remembering Julie Huibregtsen

It is with deep sadness that we announce the untimely death of Julie Huibregtsen. Many social marketers across Europe and the world will know Julie and the fantastic work she took forward on integrating social marketing principles throughout the Netherlands.

Starting in the city of Rotterdam, Julie led a programme to embed social marketing principles into all social behavioural programmes across the city. She was called on by institutions across the Netherlands to assist them developing and delivering a range of social change programmes. Julie also made many other academic and practice focused contributions, including leading workshops, courses, and keynotes to so many young academics and practitioners. She was an engaging teacher who always met people “where they were” and made social marketing both understandable and accessible to them.

Julie was also a founding member of the European Social Marketing Association and acted as a fantastic champion for social marketing across the continent. Julie will be deeply missed but her kindness, enthusiasm, intellect, and courage leave a lasting legacy. As a mark of our respect and admiration, ESMA awarded Julie with a lifetime contribution award and will be establishing a Julie Huibregtsen memorial award in her honour.

We (the Board of the European Social Marketing Association) thank Julie for all her significant contributions as a social marketing advocate and a wonderful human being. Our deepest sympathies and thoughts go to Julie’s family at this difficult time.
